Remote Mode screens are navigated using the select buttons to the left of the knobs/faders. The Motif arrow cursor buttons will scroll through Live tracks and scenes. The Motif knobs control pan and the faders volume for eight tracks at a time (1-8, 9-16, etc.) unless you activate Pan mode which flips the assignment (faders control pan, knobs control volume).
The Motif channel select 1-16 and mute/solo buttons perform the same functions in Live. The Motif transport controls the Live transport.

Information in the Yamaha Data List document (part of the manual set) about how the controls work for Cubase apply as far as track button related functions (select, arm, mute, solo) but not for the screen based tabs. Inside Live any MIDI track with input set to All Inputs will play notes when you press buttons on the Motif! Just set the input on each MIDI track to MOTIF XS (MAIN), that means the track will ignore the Remote Mode data which arrives on the MOTIF XS (REMOTE) port. Mackie Control works by sending note messages over MIDI. Once you have completed the settings, press the Remote Mode button on the Motif and transform it into a dedicated control surface, no programming required! The only drivers you need are the current MIDI/USB drivers from Yamaha.

Otherwise the large Yamaha community gets stuck with Cubase and its problems.This post describes how to connect a Yamaha Motif XS or XF workstation to Ableton Live 8 using the Yamaha Remote Mode feature. And with only Yamaha and Korg still in the workstation market, I would think that having all of Yamaha's keyboards working fully with Sonar would be a big plus for Sonar. It looks like we are one interface away from having these up and running. Just hoping more info on what these Yamaha tools are doing would be on some help to the Sonar guys trying to resolve this. I never could get my old Yamaha midi controller to work with Sonar 8.5.
I was really only concerned about local transport controls for recording, I mix on the PC. I haven't tried to get fancier than that yet. With just Sonar selected as remote type in the Motif and Mackie (not XT) as the controller type in Sonar, I have transport fully functional and my Motif sliders controlling track volumes. Used without the VST - It works fine as both a midi instrument, an audio I/O (I'm using the multi track firewire driver) and also as a basic remote control surface.

So the remote port is being used automatically and I have full control of changes and edits on the Motif, but can not play it due to no Midi out. Midi out, as it does with the other Yamaha VST editors says not configured, and there are no choices available to set it to. There is no sound coming back from the Motif. What is NOT working - is that there is NO midi OUT. Although Midi in is blank, it is working - I can play the Motif, the keys on the keyboard at the bottom on the VST light up and I can even record the midi notes into the track.

(I only had to set the driver as firewire, which is normal for a first run) Once done, I can select patches on the Motif and all the editing controls are working. When I add it as an instrument track, it DOES connect to the Motif and correctly updates itself from the motif. I know there has already been discussion about similar VST3 issues, but as I haven't seen the Motif mentioned, and it seems to be connecting a little more than the others, so I wanted to describe what it is doing. The only one with a problem is the very important Motif XF VST3. Normal VST3's, like the new Organ Yamaha has been giving away, are working fine in Sonar.
